Portland State University offers a broad array of courses and programs including the MA TESOL, TESL Certificate, and BA in Applied Linguistics. Within the MA TESOL program, you can choose from the Teaching Track or Applied Linguistics Track to flexibly pursue your goals. In both tracks, students gain skills and sensitivities to work effectively with people from different cultures and to encourage positive change in societies. Lectures, projects, and collaborative work provide a solid foundation in language structure, identity and culture, and teaching methodology. The Teaching Track also includes a teaching practicum, a research course, a language-in-use elective, and a culminating portfolio or thesis. Those with prior teaching experience have more coursework options.
Portland State has an extensive network of TESOL graduates working in a variety of settings in the US and around the world. Our exclusive Facebook discussion group helps new grads make connections and learn about opportunities for jobs in teaching and related fields.
